Description

The medical and the clinical research community creates, manages and uses a wide variety of text documents, both structured and non-structured. In order to carry out clinical research, to improve patient care levels and to easily evaluate results of treatments, it is necessary to access the content of said documents - ideally, automatically. Knowledge in non-structured text documents (e.g. pathology reports, clinical notes) is basic to achieve these objectives.

Biomedical language intensively uses specific terminology, polysemic words (homonyms) and acronyms. In addition, it is a kind of language with high ambiguity and variability: doctors create new terms and names ad hoc, use different writing syntactical and semantical styles, many terms present lexical and typographical variants, and they use many referential expressions and Inferences. For these reasons, standard natural language processing tools cannot be directly applied to the medical domain.

This research work plans to advance in the state of the art of biomedical natural language processing. The adaption of natural language processing tools to the domain, and detection techniques and disambiguation of acronyms, drugs, illnesses and/or procedures will be studied. The algorithms to be studied include massive data quantity processing methodologies in real time and supervised and non-supervised learning techniques.

Developed algorithms, methods and techniques will be evaluated in real-use applications such as patient cohort identification, clinical decision support, personalized medicine or drug development, and its use will be validated by domain experts.
