Structural Reliability: Fatigue Reducing Joint Design

Description

New demands for lightweight components requires the use of new materials and joining techniques for these materials. The most recent outlooks for the automotive industry indicate that the issue of joints is the biggest challenge in achieving additional reductions in vehicle weight, with a much greater potential than other trends associated with improved materials. This trend is also aligned with newer models of cars developed using carbon fibre, whose only alternative for assembly is through the use of adhesive joints, just as it is done in the aviation industry.

This dissertation aims at developing new criteria for the design and evaluation of such fatigue reducing joints and their durability over time (ageing, environmental degradation, etc.), by ensuring the reliability of such joints over time, which is one of the biggest challenges of this technology today. The dissertation will begin with dissertation work prior to developing this subject matter, by providing continuity to the work undertaken and where the main contribution being made has been in the development of analytical models and FEM related to the Charging Modes I and II, which have advanced calculation tools that take into account the effect of the elasticity of the adhesive with the behaviour of the structure. Additionally, the team has extensive knowledge in the field of fatigue and it also has accelerated testing machines, as well as other dissertations related to this subject area. Research work will be integrated with the IKERLAN Mechanical Team.

Requeriments

Industrial or Mechanical Engineer. The dissertation will be in English, in order to improve the dissemination of the results. Any knowledge of analytical and finite element calculus is an advantage.
