Structural Reliability: Complex Load Joint Design

    Description

    New demands for lightweight components requires the use of new materials and joining techniques for these materials. The most recent outlooks for the automotive industry indicate that the issue of joints is the biggest challenge in achieving additional reductions in vehicle weight, with a much greater potential than other trends associated with improved materials. This trend is also aligned with newer models of cars being developed using carbon fibre, whose only alternative for assembly is through the use of adhesive joints, just as it is done in the aviation industry. The dissertation aims to develop new criteria for the design and evaluation of this type of complex load joints, including their rupture processes, in order to simulate the final rupture condition during the most severe crash test events.

    The dissertation will begin with dissertation work prior to developing this subject matter, by providing continuity to the work undertaken and where the main contribution being made has been in the development of analytical models and FEM related to the Charging Modes I and II, which have advanced calculation tools that take into account the effect of the elasticity of the adhesive with the behaviour of the structure. Research work will be integrated within the IKERLAN Mechanical Team. The Doctoral Candidate will be part of a team of people consisting of Doctors and Senior Engineers from various specialities and with experience in the proposed line of research, whereby forming an interdisciplinary and highly qualified team. The dissertation will contemplate the possibility of a research visit at a renowned international centre (R&D Centre or university), which will allow the Doctoral Candidate to work within a highly skilled environment and to obtain the International Major for the Doctorate.

    Requeriments

    Industrial or Mechanical Engineer. The dissertation will be in English, in order to improve the dissemination of the results. Any knowledge of analytical and finite element calculus is an advantage.
