Description

The product manufacturing companies are facing the decision to address, in a strategic way, the path that allows them to offer services to their customers and achieve recurring income and benefits that are not achieved in the sale of products. Among these services, one of the most important is the maintenance of the products sold, where they have a large park after many years of sale.

The way to approach the services, besides representing a challenge as an organizational transformation, implies the need to define the logistic networks and the resources that allow to execute those services with acceptable levels for their clients. In this regard, and in an international after-sales service environment, the need to identify the location of logistics centres (central warehouses, intermediate warehouses, etc.), the adequate spare parts levels, the human and transport resources to be deployed, and the routes that of the maintainers.

The fact of deploying an after-sales maintenance service in an asset park implies, from the point of view of the spare parts, to define where and how many spare parts it is necessary to store in each logistics centre in order to reach a desired level of service. These consumptions will come from corrective and preventive maintenance.

Given the international nature of most of the companies that manufacture products, it is critical to identify the optimal location of these spare parts in the different warehouses, as well as the possible transfers of surpluses between them. Likewise, it is also important to define human resources and transport, which allow a rapid response to customers, ensuring the service levels established in the contracts.

Much of the existing information to address this problem of deployment of after-sales service comes from the world of industrial maintenance and asset management, and the supply chain. Therefore, it will be necessary to identify, analyse and extrapolate the existing methods and tools in both areas, in addition to those of the after-sales service area. Variables such as service levels, criticality of assets, classification of spare parts, location of warehouses, storage strategies and replacement should be taken into account to optimise the deployment of after-sales service.

In the line of research "Advanced Manufacturing" within the base technology TB5 "Service 4.0" we want to launch a doctoral thesis about the After Sales Service that seeks to answer:

  • The design of supply network architectures
  • The dimensioning of critical resources
  • A smart operational strategy to support the Management of After-Sales Service
