Description

General framework

In the current industrial context, the creation of autonomous microsystems for industrial environments is key in the positioning of the industry within the new strategy of the Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT).  Its integration will have a broad impact on the creation of new products, business models and services in the cloud.

These new elements require increasingly smaller systems (miniaturised), with more features (smart) and lower energy consumption (ultra low power / autonomous), operating in complex environments and difficult to access and to maintain (adaptable, reliable, robust), and in different sectors (transport, equipment, energy and security).  

This thesis is part of the research line, aimed at the integration of miniaturised smart systems with low consumption for industrial applications. This thesis is aligned with the knowledge, technologies and components obtained in the doctoral thesis in development of energy harvesting systems.

Global objectives

  • To define and implement a modular architecture for the development of miniaturised, wireless and ultra low power Electronic Smart Systems  (ESS).
  • To respond to different needs of industrial sensorization in multidisciplinary environments (for example hostile environments), making use of the most innovative components and the most advanced encapsulation techniques in the state of technology.
  • To perform a robust and versatile integration of all ESS components (sensors-actuators, signal conditioning, processing, power, energy management, communication and encapsulation) for application in multidisciplinary environments with changing requirements.

Scientific-technological objectives

  • To create a demonstrator that represents the minimal expression of an autonomous ESS through the integration of ultra low consumption components and encapsulated for hostile environments. Said ESS will consist of:

-        Sensor / transducer part (e.g. Crack sensor @ Strain gauges)

-        Signal conditioning

-        Processing

-        Communication

Requirements:

Languages: oral and written fluency in the English language. Knowledge of the Basque language, and other languages such as German or French, will be an advantage.
