Description

Within the current technological context, the creation of autonomous microsystems for industrial environments is essential for positioning the industry within the new strategy of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. Their integration will have a broad impact on the creation of new products (smart objects), business models and cloud services. These new elements require increasingly smaller systems (miniaturisation), along with more features (intelligence) and lower power consumption (autonomy), which can operate in complex environments (adaptability) and that can be implemented into various sectors (transport, capital equipment, energy and security). Therefore, this dissertation will define miniaturisation and integration techniques, by implementing a modular architecture for the development of miniaturised wireless and low-power consumption Intelligent Integrated Systems. This architecture will have a robust and versatile integration of all components of the microsystem (sensors-actuators, signal conditioning, processing, power, energy management, communication, encapsulation) for the implementation into multidisciplinary environments with changing requirements. The miniaturized modular design will allow for various functionalities through various morphologies, sizes and configurations of the microsystems, at a low cost and with a short development period.

These new features will enable the integration of these autonomous microsystems into industrial sensing applications and products. Furthermore, this modularity will contribute not only to create intelligent products with high added value, an essential feature in a globalised market, but also to provide the tools for digitalising processes, improving energy efficiency, productivity, data analysis capabilities, adaptability and maintenance of their products. IKERLAN defines this dissertation as being key in the search for new Industry 4.0 opportunities and it is in line with the developments and IKERLAN’s own research in various complementary fields, such as Energy Harvesting, Wireless Communications, Cyber-Security and Microencapsulation.

Degree and Specialty: Electrical/Electronic/Automation and Control Engineer, or similar degree in a field related to Industrial Microsystems. Languages: Fluent English. Knowledge in System-On-Chip Encapsulation is an advantage.
