Models of hardening simulation by induction for improvement of components in the renewable energy sector

Description

The offered thesis is part of the renewable energy sector, in which the reliability of the systems is a key point of competitiveness. The improvement of the reliability of the components is linked to the correct estimation of the state of the pieces due to the manufacturing process to improve their mechanical properties.

The main objective is to develop simulation models to calculate the residual stresses generated in the process of induction hardening. These stresses affect the fatigue life estimation of the part in question. A prior knowledge of the stresses will allow to apply with more rigor and precision the fatigue life calculation methodologies of components in operation, allowing a greater optimization of their designs.

The process of induction hardening is highly multiphysical. During the thesis, Ansys and Forge will be available to develop the simulation models. Different existing analytical models will be applied in the state of technology, especially for the transformation of the microstructure, and the most appropriate for the process studied will be selected and adapted.

Final experimental validations of residual stresses (Hole drilling y contour method) and also partial ones (temperatures, microstructure and hardness) are foreseen.
