General framework and objectives

The design methodologies are a series of indications and strategies to face the design in an orderly manner, evaluating the options generated to choose the optimal one. In recent years, the development and evolution of design methodologies has gone from simple guidelines for manufacturing to complete methodologies through the compilation of synthesis methods, which have then been extended as DfX methods to form the concept of a Design for Excellence.

Nowadays the DfX methodologies that are included in the Design for excellence movement have taken their own name (Design for X), where the X is the aspect to be prioritised (e.g. manufacturing, assembly, environment…), and they will be applied depending of the aspect of the product that you want to improve from different steps and strategies.

The DfX methodologies are relatively new; and despite the marked growth in the development of some of them for certain applications, its use today has not been widely widespread in the industry and it is difficult to find specific applications or entities and researchers dedicated exclusively to this topic. In addition, when applying different DfX simultaneously in the same design or product development globally, in many cases the improvements they provide are contradictory. Also, each methodology must be adapted to each sector and objectives that are proposed to improve, so effective procedures and tools are required to select the most influential "X" methodologies in each specific application and facilitate their use.

The thesis tries to adapt these methodologies to large-scale goods with an important factor of assembly (e.g. lifts, wind farms, solar farms, presses, cutting lines, large industrial equipment: machining centres, furnaces ...). The methodologies and especially the DfX tools are created for products assembled in the production plant itself, since it is where the effort required is best used. Given the nature of many of the products developed in IK4-Ikerlan, it is proposed to adapt the tools of these methodologies, and the methodology itself if necessary, to be effective in the design of products with smaller runs and a component of important external assembly, in order to analyse with greater rigor the logistic processes, mounting modes insitu, submodules that must be assembled (limit geometries, limit weights...). All this trying to integrate: DfMA, DfMaintenance and DfDissasembly.
