Description

Side-channel attacks have been successfully used to break systems that are protected with encryption. Said attacks exploit variations in non-functional properties with some type of dependency on the data to be extracted (normally, the encryption key), such as for example variations in the power consumption of the execution time of a program. The most common means of protection against these attacks is the reduction or elimination of said variations, which can have an impact on efficiency, increasing consumption, execution time or the volume of traffic. This thesis researches how to find a balance between protecting against these attacks and the efficiency required in embedded systems for industrial environments.
More specifically, the global objectives of this thesis are:
• To analyse and classify the protection against side-channel attacks.
• To establish the selection procedure for the most adequate protection, depending on the application.
• To define the procedure to quantitatively measure the level of security of said protection in real systems.
This thesis will align its development with the knowledge, technologies and microcomponents obtained in another thesis that is currently under way. It approaches the development of a generic parameterisable countermeasure against side-channel attack systems.
The scientific-technological objectives of this thesis are:
• To create an environment for validation of countermeasures against side-channels that can analyse, characterise and classify the countermeasures proposed
• To define a methodology and the tools associated to compare various countermeasure solutions for side-channel attacks, with the objective of facilitating the selection of the most suitable countermeasure for each case. To carry out this comparison, the following aspects are considered key:
 To avail of a simulation environment for the various solutions, in such a manner that a decision can be made before availing of the real implementation in the system to be protected
 To use a personalised variant of the 6sigma methodology (including the design of experiments) in order to obtain the information
 To locate and define a strategy to measure the level of vulnerability of the measures analysed
