Cybersecure Cooperative IoT Schemes to Provide Reliable Communications and Interaction Among Distributed Intelligent Nodes

    After a first wave of technology based on IoT (Internet of Things), the development of the concept called IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) had commenced. New generation IIoT scenarios will require the development of new techniques and communication schemes among various objects and machinery to provide interconnected modular systems that are capable of handling complex functions with a high degree of reliability.

    Delegating tasks, with a higher criticality in integrated nodes, to intelligent robots will require the availability of mechanisms to ensure system operation reliability, and, where appropriate, the automatic recovery of the functionality on the basis of cooperative environments between systems. These cooperation scenarios between IIoT nodes include aspects concerning the robustness of communications and the cyber security required to protect the fault systems and/or cyber attacks against them.

    The dissertation will research lightweight communication protocols and cooperative interaction schemes for IIoT environments with high levels of resilience and ensuring operation under environments with losses and attacks to the system communications. The focus will be targeted on the analysis of solutions that ensure robustness, reliability and QoS for the communications between IoT nodes with limited HW resources. Communication routing schemes between nodes will also be researched to achieve the level of security required to ensure the proper functioning of the system.

    The Doctoral Candidate will undertake theoretical research, the virtual modelling and will potentially include the prototyping of nodes showing the techniques developed by the Doctoral Candidate.

    The Doctoral Candidate will be part of a team of people consisting of Doctors and Senior Engineers from various specialities and with experience in the proposed line of research, whereby forming an interdisciplinary and highly qualified team.

    The dissertation will contemplate the possibility of a research visit at a renowned international centre (R&D Centre or university), which will allow the Doctoral Candidate to work within a highly skilled environment and to obtain the International Major for the Doctorate.

    Telecommunications Engineering, Information Technology Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Degree in Mathematics, Degree in Physics, or similar.

    Proficiency in the English language is considered essential (the Doctoral Candidate will conduct a research visit at a renowned international Centre for at least 3 months).

    The Doctoral Candidate must have initiative and be motivated to develop new concepts and communication schemes, along with leadership skills for the resolution of issues.

    Doctoral Candidate skills in the following areas are an advantage:

    -          Programming languages: C, C++, etc.

    -          Modelling and simulation languages: OPNET, Omnet++, Matlab, etc.

    -          Mathematics.

    -          Leadership skills and problem-solving abilities.

    -          Ability to work in a team.

    Scientific vocation.
