Advanced CBM systems: lift use case

Description

Maintenance services account for a significant part of the operating cost of high-value systems, especially when possible failures result in large down times. This is the case in the elevator industry. Condition based maintenance strategies provide a cost efficient way to cope with the safety and reliability requirements of such systems. These strategies monitor the condition of the system to evaluate the maintenance requirements leading to a predictive maintenance. Condition monitoring schemes rely on the measurement of specific variables of the system. These measurements are later processed in order to extract features that allow us to detect faulty conditions of the asset (the elevator in this case).

In particular, in this thesis the following tasks will be addressed:
 Development of electromechanical models for elevator installations comprising both the mechanical and electrical subsystems in order to represent the dynamic behavior of an elevator during the ride.
 Usage of reduced-scaled elevator test benches for the emulation of different elevator configurations.
 Application of dimensional analysis ensuring the similarity between the scaled test bench and the full-size system.
 Derivation of extended state-space recursive least square algorithms for virtual sensing.

With all this the specific objectives of this thesis are:
 Address open questions of the model based virtual sensing in its application to the predictive maintenance of elevators.
 Be able to know, not only the health state of an elevator at a particular time, but also to monitor continuously the state of the installation, predicting its possible degradation and performing the maintenance operations when they are actually needed.

Requeriments

Required Degree: Industrial Engineering, Automation and Industrial Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Degree in Physics, Degree in Mathematics.
Any knowledge of physical system modelling tools, such as Dymola or Matlab/Simulink will be an advantage. Any knowledge of signal processing in a Matlab environment will be an advantage. Any prior experience in the use of signal acquisition systems (Brüel & Kjaer, National Instrument, Oros, etc.) will be an advantage.
Languages: Oral and written fluency in the English language. Knowledge of the Basque language, and other languages such as German or French, will be an advantage.
Autonomy, creativity, communication skills. Ability to build relationships and work in a team. Proactivity, responsibility and commitment, while facing challenging situations.
